Let’s work hard to make it more than a trend. We can make it our lifestyle. Learn daily tips here and on Facebook every week day in February 2017 during a live chat about the Sustainable Living Tip of the day. Everything can be done in a sustainable way. Let’s tackle a new sustainable living issue today!
- Nations that are leading in sustainability efforts charge money for plastic bags. This prompts customers to always bring their own reusable bags.
- Some major US cities still have not caught on to reusable bags. In 2015, Dallas, Texas passed a plastic bag ban, but it was quickly repealed due to public backlash. It truly saddened me that the public would despise something that helps to lessen pollution. It shows we still have a long way to go in educating everyone about sustainable issues and how much our individual actions impact the earth.
- Worldwide, a trillion single-use plastic bags are used each year, nearly 2 million each minute.
- The amount of energy required to make 12 plastic shopping bags could drive a car for a mile.
- California enacted the USA’s first statewide plastic bag ban.
Plastic bag problems
Taking our own reusable bag to the grocery store is one of the easiest ways to eliminate the waste that millions of plastic bags create. We use those plastic bags once, and then what? Plastic bags seem easy to deal with in the short term – simply use them and toss them. If we keep them, we either hoard them or use them one more time in small trash cans at home. In long run, however, they are causing more harm to us than we really know. They pollute our land and water when they are improperly disposed of (trashed instead of recycled).
I’ll be the first to admit that my personal reusable bag stash is a hot mess. I have bags of so many different sizes that I’ve collected from promotional events and ones I’ve paid 99 cents for in checkout lines. I always forget to pack them when it is time to make a grocery store run. Once I get inside of the store, I don’t know where to put them. I seriously love the idea of not contributing to plastic waste, but it needs to be easier!
Envirobagz reusable shopping bags
For every inconvenience that I listed above, Envirobagz is the solution. The Envirobagz are a set of 4 reusable shopping bags that are made especially for grocery shopping. They come in two sizes: Standard size for Walmart sized shopping carts and Costco size for shopping carts like those at Costco and Sam’s Club. The smallest bag is even insulated to help keep frozen items cold. Instead of having to stuff the bags together, they velcro very nicely to each other, and roll up like a yoga mat together. They are so easy to keep up with because of that!
Shopping with Envirobagz
When you go shopping, remember to load up your Envirobagz. Take them into the store with you and sit them across your cart (still rolled up and unexpanded) while you shop. Once you get to the checkout line, load all of your groceries onto the conveyor belt. Next, open the Envirobagz across your cart, and load up your groceries into them after the cashier scans each item. After you’ve paid for everything and it is snuggly stored in the Envirobagz, head to your car to pack them up. It is easy to detach the bags from each other and store them in the trunk or back seat. When you arrive home, unload as you always do! This time, it will be fewer bags, and they will be more organized! After you put your groceries away, simply velcro the bags back together and place hem back in your car!
Sustainable reusable bags for shopping can be that easy! I love that Envirobagz also sells reusable produce bags, helping to eliminate even more plastic bag waste. My only question/challenge for you today is: What are you waiting for? Get your own set of Envirobagz and become a more conscious and sustainable shopper today. #NoPlastic
