Lipstick | 4 Eco-Friendly & Organic Alternatives to Your Favorites
Green, sustainable, eco-friendly, ethical. If you follow along with the Old World New journey, you hear these words from me all of the time. I am on a mission to help you live a healthier, cleaner life and to leave the planet full of healthy, natural resources for the generations after us. There are levels to this green living! I am here to make it as easy as possible. I’m not going to throw you out in the waters with a list of of oils and butters and hoping you create a mixture of something that you might love. I want to introduce you to brands that already make great products like the ones you know and trust so much, but with a better purpose, with better ingredients, and with a better (i.e. lower) impact on the earth.
This time around, let’s talk lipstick. Think of your favorite lipstick brand. Now think of the ingredients they use. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. I challenge you to research the ingredients in your favorite lipstick. What is in it, and what does it have the potential to do to your body? What else are these ingredients found in? Worst of all, do they test these cosmetics on harmless animals just to see if they won’t harm you? Educate yourself about the products you consume, and you just might not want to consume them again.
While you’re educating yourself on your normal lipstick, allow me to introduce you to four eco-friendly lipstick brands. They are made with impeccable ingredients that nourish, not harm. Some are made locally in the USA, so you know the people that create them are being treated fairly. Best of all, though, these colors are popping! No sacrifice in quality, color, options or variety in order to have a product that is also good for you. You can keep it natural and green and still be the most stylish lady (or gent) in the room.
Mineral Fusion
The Mineral Fusion lipstick rolls on thick and smooth, and it smells divine. It has the typical wearing time of natural lipstick, which means it wears well, but you will have to reapply after it is disrupted (i.e. after eating or drinking). Buy your Mineral Fusion lipstick, like this Intensity color, online here and in stores like Whole Foods Market.
The Lip Bar
While many natural brands stick to lighter colors or hues of red, this brand is not afraid to give you color. WILD color! I’ve purchased a red color from them in the past, and I loved it. This time, I left the reds to the over the counter brands and decided to go for a pop of color from The Lip Bar. Purple Rain accomplishes that, right? I think so. The color is very bold and long lasting, and the lipstick is extremely moisturizing. A big kudos to this brand for now being sold in Forever 21, a big feat for a company from small, humble, organic beginnings! They’ve also recently announced a drop in prices overall, while maintaining their impeccable quality. Get yours now – purchase here!
Gabriel
Gabriel is a luxurious organic brand. You can find this brand at some whole food or farmers market chain stores, and online. The color is intense and the lipstick itself is creamy and moisturizing. Pictured here is the color Pomegranate, and you can buy Gabriel lipstick here.
Burt’s Bees
This is a relatively new line of lipstick from Burt’s Bees, and it is packing more rich color than I am used to with their lip tints. The color is pretty strong, but not overwhelmingly intense. The feel is velvety and smooth. The color I am wearing here is called Scarlet Soaked. You can buy Burt’s Bees Lipstick at stores like Whole Foods Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, Target, Walmart, and more!
Remember: Natural lipsticks EXPIRE. They expire more quickly than others because most do not contain harmful preservatives. If you are going to invest in them, make sure you strut your stuff and wear them regularly. Sometimes you will see oil on the actual lipstick (usually on the cylindrical part, not the top), and this is natural, too, since it is full of natural oils. Most importantly, remember that “green/sustainable/organic/natural” lipsticks are AMAZING! The colors above and below just don’t lie. Do your lips a favor and go natural for them! You’ll be happy that you did.
xoxo, dolls & dudes
