10 Black-Owned Natural & Sustainable Cleaning Brands To Try This Year

Support Black-owned natural businesses all year long! These natural and sustainable cleaning brands make it easy to find natural cleaning supplies for a less toxic home.

Why clean with natural & sustainable products?

Cleaning with natural products lessens our exposure to toxic chemicals that cause harm as we inhale them. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are in several mainstream cleaners and “fresheners.” That means bleach, floor polishes, oven cleaners, and air fresheners can all cause harm to our bodies. (source: lung.org)

Personally, I have experienced labored breathing and itchy skin when exposed to cleaners that use harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances. Some people have experienced far worse, and some people may not experience anything at all. No matter how those chemical-laden products impact you, switching to people- and planet-friendly cleaners is good for your overall health.

Do Natural Products actually clean well?

Heck yes, natural products actually clean well. I’ve found some natural products that clean better than mainstream products. They can really cut through some tough grease, smell amazing with natural fragrances, and even disinfect surfaces.

Highlighting Black-owned natural cleaning brands:

For Black History Month 2022, I am highlighting 100 Black-owned brands that sell natural, non-toxic, sustainable, and environmentally conscious products. While this is a BHM goal to share all of these brands, I implore you to shop Black-owned eco-friendly brands year-round.

Black-Owned Natural & Sustainable Cleaning Brands:

A clear spray bottle with a black spray nozzle of natural cleaning spray by Black-owned cleaning products company PUR Home

1) PUR Home

I have loved watching the evolution of PUR Home, founded by Angela Richardson and Michelle Richardson, over the years. They offer different non-toxic cleaners that are scented with different essential oils for kitchen and all over the home. Their core values are ones that reflect their many efforts to create products for healthy homes and not causing harm to the earth.

a bag of liquid detergent named TRUE detergent - it is a Black-owned company. The bag is brightly colored with purples, greens, oranges, and yellows. A lid full of detergent sits beside the upright bag of detergent.

2) True Products

True Detergent is both eco-friendly and economical because of its 4x concentration. Being that concentrated means that consumers can use less of it while buying the same amount of detergent as other brands. One container can clean up to 101 loads! The creators and owners are three Black men with years of business experience – Ali B. Muhammad, Malik Saleem, and Abdur-Rahim Shaheed. They bring that expertise to a business that has a mission to protect the earth with the products that they create. Part of their written mission states: “We will not conduct business in a way that will break the peace or corrupt the land.” This is a goal we can all support!

Olive Branch Wellness specializes in clean beauty and haircare products, but they also sell some items for “home wellness.” This essentials disinfectant spray is made of natural ingredients to help kill germs. Like many people who start their journey into living a more clean and green life, The Green Laundress was created by Erica Ahmed after the birth of her daughter. Protecting our young ones is a true catalyst to live more sustainably and naturally. This laundry detergent is made with natural and non-toxic ingredients and is safe for sensitive skin, all while thoroughly cleaning clothes.

5) Pardo Naturals

It was the search for a natural remedy for her daughter’s eczema that led Rita Pardo to learn more about natural cleaning and skincare. Pardo Naturals offers a wide range of natural products for body care, haircare, beauty care, pets, lifestyle, and cleaning for an eco-friendly home, of course. From all-purpose cleaners to natural dishwasher tablets (pictured left), there are several options to help lead a more natural and Earth-friendly lifestyle.

6) The Hoot All-Natural

Founder Tonya Newsome has over two decades of experience as a cleaning professional. It was her encounter with cleaning products that cause skin irritation that made her rethink what type of products she cleaned with and all of the chemicals they contained. After much research, she created The Hoot All-Natural products. These clean and natural cleaning sprays clean well without the harmful chemicals.

7) Good Vibes All Purpose Cleaner

Founder and ECO Ymani Efunyale had a scare with her son when he was only two years old. He inhaled a product that claimed to be a natural cleaning spray, which resulted in him having an asthma attack. From that point forward, she was on a mission to learn more about true natural cleaning alternatives. Hence, she created Good Vibes concentrated all-purpose natural cleaner. Good Vibes boasts a line of natural scent combinations that are unique to just them.

white laundry stain sticks mostly wrapped in brown paper packaging - by the brand LooHoo

8) LooHoo

Cydni Price, Founder and CEO of LooHoo, created this wool dryer ball company after learning ways to reduce toxins in her home. As someone who grew up on a farm, she wanted to support American farmers close to home. The LooHoo wool dryer balls get all of their wool from a historic wool mill in Maine. While wool dryer balls are the main product, LooHoo also carries products by other brands, such as this Stain Stick by SoulShine Soap Co.

9) Dinobi

Wife and mother Sylvia Emuwa created Dinobi to have an effective laundry detergent that was gentle enough for her children and husband’s skin. After years of cloth diapering and creating natural skin solutions for her family, she set out to create a detergent that didn’t contain harmful chemicals like those she had been using. A great feature of the Dinobi detergent is that it is effective in combating the ammonia smell that stays in cloth diapers after many washes.

10) BLK+GRN

BLK+GRN is included on many lists that I share because founder Dr. Kristian and her team have created a great marketplace for natural and sustainable black-owned brands. Now, they also make their own products across different categories! This plant-derived cleaning spray uses hydrogen peroxide (another great multi-purpose cleaning ingredient) and orange oil to naturally sanitize and clean.

Discarding the top of strawberries has been the norm my entire life. But why?

Eating the tops of strawberries is one tiny sustainable change that didn’t take a lot of effort.

What’s one small eco-conscious change you’ve implemented that made you say “Why didn’t I think of this before?!” 💡✨
