Vintage Recipes: Chocolate Pound Cake

Some recipes stand the test of time because the flavor they have never goes out of style. Pound cake is one of those recipes. This chocolatey spin on a classic Europe to America cake recipe is a quick way to add more flavor to a simple recipe. Enjoy this chocolate pound cake recipe!

I absolutely love finding decades old cook books at thrift stores and antique shops. I found this vintage Good Housekeeping cookbook a few years ago and shared the Old Dominion Pound Cake recipe with y’all. For National Chocolate Cake Day I wanted to find a new recipe. I was surprised to learn about this chocolate version of a such a classic cake.

A pound cake is both easy to make and easy to mess up. For such an uncomplicated recipe, there are so many different versions (see a brief history of the pound cake) and ways to make it. And not everyone’s pound cake tastes the same. Pound cakes are super dense (which is how they got their name), but some recipes make for moist pound cakes while others are flaky. I’ve found that the pound cake recipes that call for cream of tartar (like this one) make flaky and super dense cakes. Those that use cream cheese turn out more moist.

The Result

This cake was so different to me because I didn’t know what to expect. It tastes chocolatey and it has a pound cake taste and texture. It’s different, but I like it! I think it will pair well with some vanilla ice cream.

Discarding the top of strawberries has been the norm my entire life. But why?

Eating the tops of strawberries is one tiny sustainable change that didn’t take a lot of effort.

What’s one small eco-conscious change you’ve implemented that made you say “Why didn’t I think of this before?!” 💡✨
