Use These Checklists for Easy Eco-Friendly Swaps in Your Home

Creating an eco-friendly home with a room by room checklist

Creating an Eco-Friendly Home

Creating an eco-friendly home and lifestyle seems overwhelming when you’re bombarded with all of the things you should do to be better at it. No doubt, there are a lot of changes that you can make. Realistically, you can’t make them all in one day, or one week, or one month, or even one year. Change takes time, practice, and patience. I’ve created these eco-friendly home checklists as inspiration and tools to inform, not a standard to live up to. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” That is a quote I live by. I, myself, am not even 50% successful at these lists. However, now I have the knowledge, and I can aspire to create a more eco-friendly home based on this information.

How To Use the Eco-Friendly Home Checklists

You can use these eco-friendly home checklists in several ways, such as:

  1. Share them on your Instagram stories like an actual checklist. Check off items you have accomplished, and encourage your friends to save the checklist and do the same! Make sure you tag #oldworldnew when you do!
  2. Use it as a goals list. Choose a room that you feel most comfortable making eco-friendly, set a budget and a timeline, whether its a month or two years. Create the eco-friendly home that you need, one item at a time.
  3. Add these items to your shopping list little by little to make a big difference and create a more eco-friendly home.

An eco-friendly home is just a few checklists away! What do you already have? What do you need? Take your time and live a little more sustainably each day!

The Eco-Friendly Home Checklists

Create an eco-friendly home by following this kitchen checklist!

Eco-Friendly Kitchen

Some of the easiest switches in the kitchen are your cleaning tools. Instead of plastic sponges that leave behind particles, or plastic scrubbers that never really get the job done anyway, switch to plant-based scrubbers. Ecococonut carries coconut husk scrubbers that I love. They actually clean better than any other type of scrubber I’ve used, besides a brillo soap pad. The big difference is that they don’t have toxic soap on them, and they’re gentle. I can use them on baby spoons and cast iron skillets, alike.

• plant based scrubbers and sponges
• plant based liquid soap
• bar soaps
• cloth towels (not paper towels)
• glass storage containers
• beeswax or plant based wax wraps
• stretchy cotton bowl covers
• essential oils
• non-toxic cookware (i.e. stainless steel, cast iron, and glass)
• compost bin
• recycling area
• low flow faucet

Create an eco-friendly home by following this bathroom checklist!
Eco-Friendly Bathroom

When making the switch to a more eco-friendly bathroom, it’s easy to start with soaps. Instead of buying liquid soaps, but package free bar soap. This cuts out on plastic waste that is generated from the several bottles you go through when you repeatedly buy liquid soaps. Another majorly beneficial switch is investing in a safety razor. This old school razor will be the last razor you ever need to buy, if you treat it right. Having one razor for life, versus several plastic razors that can’t be recycled, sounds like the perfect way to create an eco-friendly home, right?

• plant based cleaners
• bidet
• bamboo toilet paper (Brandless)
• Waterpik or eco-friendly floss
• bamboo toothbrush
• organic tooth powder in reusable jar
• natural body care
• bar soap
• stainless steel safety razor
• essential oils
• cotton or bamboo bath towels
• bamboo or cotton facial towels
• cotton or bamboo rounds/squares
• water saving low flow shower-head
• low flow faucet aerator

Create an eco-friendly home by following this hygiene checklist!Eco-Friendly Hygiene

Eco-friendly hygiene overlaps with creating and eco-friendly bathroom, of course. However, it goes a little more in-depth in regards to what you put on your body. Here’s some ways to make skincare choices that will help create a more sustainable home.

{click the image to save it on Pinterest}
• organic toothpowder in a reusable jar
• cotton menstrual pads & cotton tampons
• menstrual cups
• reusable cotton, bamboo, or hemp pads
• biodegradable pregnancy test (by Lia)
• eco-friendly condoms (by Sustain)
• bar soap, shampoo, and conditioner
• bamboo toothbrush
• Waterpik or eco-friendly floss
• cotton or bamboo bath towels, facial towels, and rounds/squares
• organic skincare products
• bamboo comb, if your hair texture allows for it
• DIY hair & skin products
• bulk hair and skin products, like black soap and shea butter
• mouthwash tablets

Create an eco-friendly home by following this nursery checklist!

Eco-Friendly Nursery

American (United States) tradition makes having a baby very consumeristic. People buy, buy, buy in excess when it comes to a new child. However, children actually need very little compared to the extravagant amount of gifts many popular baby showers show you. The amount and types of items you buy for a baby can help you to create a more tranquil and eco-friendly surrounding for them.
{click the image to save it on Pinterest}
• cloth diapers
• reusable cloth wipes + organic wipe solution
• glass bottles
• natural rubber pacifier/soother
• organic cotton sheets
• organic cotton swaddle blankets
• thrifted/second hand clothes
• organic cotton clothes
• solid wood furniture
• second hand furniture
• all-natural/organic baby wash, shampoo, and lotion

Create an eco-friendly home by following this bedroom checklist!Eco-Friendly Bedroom

A bedroom is usually a person’s personal haven. You spend 1/3 of your day asleep, so you probably spend a little more than that time in your bedroom. Make that time as green as can be!
{click the image to save it on Pinterest}
• organic mattress & bedding
• organic cotton or bamboo sheets
• essential oil diffuser + essential oils
• air purifying house plants
• bamboo pillows
• solid wood furniture
• second hand furniture
• air purifier machine

Create an eco-friendly home by following this laundry room & clothing checklist!Eco-Friendly Laundry

Cleaning and clothes create a lot of waste around the home. Being mindful of the products you use and the types of clothes you own helps to cut down on this waste.

{click the image to save it on Pinterest}

• plant based laundry detergent
• soap nuts if they are local to you
• vinegar
• baking soda
• natural fiber clothes
• microfiber catching laundry ball
• wool dryer balls
• essential oils  (see if there’s a company on share a sale)
• garment brush + lint remover
• use the SUN to remove stains, when possible
• organic stain removers
• energy efficient appliances
• dry clean at home

Create an eco-friendly home by following these tips!

Eco Friendly Home Tips

There are several other areas around the home that can use a small change to make a big difference. A lot of these action items require a big investment of time, money, and dedication before you can reap the results. As a result of these investments, you can save money and decrease your ecological footprint at the same time.

{click the image to save it on Pinterest}

• low or zero VOC paint, or milk paint
• reclaimed wood flooring
• non-toxic carpet
• energy-efficient light bulbs
• change air filters regularly
• smart thermostat
• native plants in yard
• organic insect spray
• solar panels
• rainwater harvesting system
• faucet aerators
• energy efficient machines
• ON/OFF power strips for electronics
• clean refrigerator coils

So, which room or items will you be tackling on these lists first? My current focus is greening up my hygiene & laundry routines a little more. I’m nowhere near being 100% complete with checking off these lists, nor am I in a rush. I’m going to take my baby steps and live more sustainably every day. I hope you do the same!

xoxo dolls & dudes,
Addie

Discarding the top of strawberries has been the norm my entire life. But why?

Eating the tops of strawberries is one tiny sustainable change that didn’t take a lot of effort.

What’s one small eco-conscious change you’ve implemented that made you say “Why didn’t I think of this before?!” 💡✨
