The Sustainability of Keeping What We Already Own

One of the most sustainable things that we can do is to keep what we already own. Usually, that also means that needing to do routine upkeep in order to maintain the integrity of our belongings. When it comes to clothes, this can be a daunting task. Mending clothes requires a set of skills that not everyone has anymore. As a creative, I’ve loved sewing here and there since I was very young. However, I am no seamstress or sewist. Likewise, social media has introduced me to so many cool techniques to mend clothes, but I have yet to try them. My “clothes to fix” pile has grown, but barely anything has been fixed yet.

That’s where the Humade Gold Iron-On Textile Kit from Sugru.com comes in to save the day. When Sugru.com reached out to work with me, I instantly thought of my “clothes to fix” pile. I wanted to get started mending all of my clothes right away!!

Why Should We Mend Clothes?

Here are a few reasons why you should mend the clothes that you already have:

  • Mending what you already have means that you won’t throw it away. You will create less textile waste.
  • You’ll help to break the stigma of mending clothes being seen as of lesser value.
  • {REDUCE OVERCONSUMPTION!} – Mending results in buying less new clothes and less fast fashion since the clothes you own can last longer with mending.
  • Keep your favorite clothes longer – fixing them means you extend their life so that you don’t have to part with them before you are ready.
  • Mending kids’ clothes is also important. Kids outgrow clothes at a fast pace and they are also very rough on clothing. Mending allows you to help them keep their clothes a little longer and it makes them acceptable as hand me downs, as well.

How to Mend Clothes with a Humade Iron-On Textile Kit from Sugru.com

The reason why I love this kit so much is because it is SUPER EASY to use! For the number one item that I wanted to mend, I had no idea how to fix the particular fabric. I didn’t want to make it look less nice than it originally did. They are a pair of linen pants that belong to my 4 year old son. The designer intentionally created these pants to be beautiful and sustainable. Whereas most of my son’s clothes are secondhand, these pants are made by hand from recovered fabric and then designed to last longer because they are clothes that grow! Ordinarily it is easy for me to fix his everyday clothes, but I wanted to fix these pants so that they were still like the artwork that I see them as.

With the Humade Iron-On Gold Textile Kit, I feel like I’m creating kintsugi art with a pair of pants. Kintsugi, or kintsukuroi, is a traditional Japanese art in which broken pottery is mended and the veins where the pieces are reconnected are painted gold. Placing these gold patches over the holes in the linen where my son fell while having fun turned out beautifully. Here’s how I mended his pants using these gold iron-ons:

3. Iron the gold patches on

Per the instructions, press the iron onto the patches on the clothing, shiny side facing up, for 15 seconds at 150°C with the steam-function turned off. Let it cool before removing the top film. If the patches require more heat to adhere better, use the baking paper to recover the shapes and press down on them for 2 more seconds.

Final thoughts on the Humade Gold Iron-On Textile Kit from Sugru.com to mend clothes

Because I really love these linen pants for my son, I was dramatically broken-hearted when my son first fell and tore them. After that, they sat untouched for a few months because I had no clue how to fix them while maintaining their beauty. The Humade Gold Iron-On Textile Kit changed that immediately. It made it easy to repair the pants, and it even gave them a new level of elegance with the golden designs. Somehow, he managed to scuff one repaired knee again soon after the pants were gilded with the patches. I’m not even worried – I was actually immediately excited to create a new design over it! Now, to find more forgotten items in our closets that I can repair…

Discarding the top of strawberries has been the norm my entire life. But why?

Eating the tops of strawberries is one tiny sustainable change that didn’t take a lot of effort.

What’s one small eco-conscious change you’ve implemented that made you say “Why didn’t I think of this before?!” 💡✨
