What Sustainable Fashion Means to Me

Sustainable fashion, to me, is a kaleidoscope of fashion options, in moderation, that build a closet that’s meant to last a long time. My sustainable closet does contain some fast fashion pieces, but they were purchased at the thrift store. There are old clothes from folks I don’t know (thrifted, estate sales, garage sales, online resale marketplaces), and some right from my Aunti’s closet. Sustainable fashion isn’t just the new and trendy pieces, it is also the clothes that we hold on to and repair, take care of, and see ourselves wearing for as long as possible. In order to keep these clothes in good shape longer, I know that I need to launder them in a sustainable way. That’s where EC30 comes in.

How EC30 Helps to Reduce Our Laundry Carbon Footprint

Did you know that 80% of carbon emissions associated with laundry occur at home? That’s right! When you wash with hot water and when you use the dryer, the energy required for those processes releases a lot of CO2. Knowing this fact, I’ve partnered with EC30 (Enlightened Cleaning) to share three ways we all can reduce our carbon footprint while laundering our clothes. EC30 is a personal and home care company that creates solid, single dose cleaning solutions for your home and your body. I love that EC30 has eco-friendly laundry detergent packaging that uses ZERO PLASTIC BOTTLES and is biodegradable or recyclable. EC30 is able to reduce their emissions in several ways:

  • making the products solid, which means they have no water in them, drastically reduces the weight of the products, thus making them lighter to transport
  • EC30 manufacturing facilities are all in the US and use 100% renewable energy
  • once again, there are no plastics used to house these products – the packaging is also minimal, really cute, and Instagram worthy!

EC30 goes beyond those steps in its efforts to help you people reduce your carbon footprint. Through working with them, I’ve realized that they really want to help us love our clothes a little longer, and make easy eco-friendly changes at home. They partnered up with Boyish, a sustainable clothing company, and sent me a pair of jeans to try along with their solid laundry swatches. I love them both! I’m always amazed with the sustainable innovations happening all around, and using these EC30 swatches is a lot of fun in addition to being more sustainable. It’s thrilling to reimagine the future with products like these!

Without further ado, let’s dive into it!

3 Tips to Reduce Our Carbon Footprint While Washing Clothes at Home

use cold water to wash clothes and conserve energy with EC30 laundry swatches

1) Wash Clothes in Cold Water

When you use hot water to wash your clothes, it requires carbon creating energy to heat that water up. Washing clothes in cold water prevents that. But not every detergent works well in cold water, unfortunately. EC30 is formulated to perform and clean clothes well in cold water, making cold water cleaning a viable option!

2) Use a Sustainable Laundry Detergent

Ding, ding, ding! EC30 here. No plastic, solid swatches with no water, which reduces the overall product weight, manufactured in facilities powered by 100% renewable energy, and more!

3) Wash Less, Wear Longer

Don’t wash your clothes every time you wear them. Unless they are stained and sweaty, there is no need to wash them each time you wear them. Washing your clothes frequently diminishes their quality, breaks them down faster, and fades their color. EC30 has laundry swatches that are scent-free or with a scent, so if you want your clothes to smell good longer, I suggest trying the “blue mist” scented laundry swatches!

Bonus: Dry Clothes Outside

If you have the space and the time, sit or hang your clothes outside to dry! Dryers can require a lot of energy and generate a lot of carbon emissions as a result. The sun is THE renewable energy source, so it gets the drying job done! If you want a less harsh drying situation, you can always hang items on your shower rod or somewhere within your house where they still get enough air to dry.
